A Special Monkey’s Birthday!

I know that it’s kind of late, but I want to congratulate my younger brother’s birthday, which was on March 14th (yes, the same day as White day in Korea). I love my younger brother despite the countless times we quarrel and absolutely drive our mom nuts. He is special to me and I wanted to make this the most remarkable birthday card that he has ever received! :)

Oops..Because of You..I Got Insomnia Again.

The weather was absolutely amazing today. The sun was shining, while there was a faint blow of wind. All of a sudden, I felt like going through my iTunes. While listening, I came up with an amusing idea. ddd

“Why don’t I do a remix of the songs Oops…I Did It Again by Britney Spears, Because of You by Kelly Clarkson, and Insomnia by Craig David?” fff

ddd

Photo from Flickr

Of course, there needed to be a plot that would connect the three songs together and create a flow. So, I decided to refer to my past experience with my teddy bear (Awww, I know). If you have read previous posts on my blog, you will see that I have moved numerous times. I could never get used to moving or packing my beloved teddy bear with the rest of my stuff into those huge boxes. Just to let you know, I was one of those “sappy” elementary kids who just couldn’t live without her teddy bear.  Here I go! Music cue!

ffff

I. Oops…I Did It Again

eee

Oops!

… I moved again.
Had to put you away.
You got lost in the truck.
Oh, baby baby.

eee

II. Because of You

After I saw you say bye
I cried every night in my sleep
I was so young I should have known better than to pack you away
You never thought of anyone else
You just looked at my face
And now I cry in the middle of the night
For that same furry hug

Because of you
I never strayed too far from my bedside
Because of you
I learned to play with the other dolls so I wouldn’t get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but all the moving companies around me
Because of you
I was afraid

dddd

III. Insomnia

ddd
I never thought that I’d look for you, you, you, you
But I saw your fur sticking out from the trunk, trunk, trunk, trunk
Being without you Teddy, I was all messed up, up, up, up
When you were locked up, I said nothing was enough-nough-nough-nough

I’ve been a fool, Teddy I know
Didn’t expect this is how things would go
It’s been a long time, you’ve lost an eye
Now looking back I wish time could rewind

I can’t sleep till you’re next to me
No I can’t live without you no more (without you no more)
Oh I stay up till you’re next to me (to me)
Till my room feels like it did before

Feels like insomnia ah ah, Feels like insomnia ah ah
Feels like insomnia ah ah, Feels like insomnia ah ah
Feels like insomnia ah ah, Feels like insomnia ah ah
Feels like insomnia ah ah, Feels like insomnia ah ah

Home Alone

Photo from Flickr

fffffff

Everyone knows Kevin. He dominates the screens of millions every Christmas with his unbelievable wit all over the world! He is a savior to all those lonely solos during the holidays and a kid’s best friend on Christmas morning. Kevin brings joy to all those who watch him taking on those bad guys, Harry and Marv (referring to the Home Alone and Home Alone 2) with his childish pranks that inevitably succeed each time. But, have you ever considered what it really feels like to be home alone? How does a mere child handle all of the loneliness, when even I, a teenage girl, can’t?

.

.

.

For the past two days, I was home alone. Surely, in the United States, it is illegal for anyone who’s not yet an adult to stay at home by themselves without parental supervision. However, in Korea, this does not apply. A majority of Korean students stay at home for hours, or even days. This is not an exception to the little elementary children either. Since there are a lot of families where both the mother and father work, their children are left at home all alone.

dddd

So right now, you probably think that it’s not such a big deal for me. WRONG. I dread feeling lonely. Although there are moments when I long to spend some time with me, myself, and I, it is never more than a few hours. I need there to be noise – the sound of laughter, whispers, shouts, anything that confirms the presence of other people. To me, the more the merrier.

Maybe it is just me, but while I was by myself, I came to realize just how blessed I am to have a family; one that I have spent my life with for sixteen years. Now, as a high school student, I thought darkness was never a thing to be afraid of. I was positive that I had conquered my fear towards the dark the day I graduated from elementary school. Once again, I was proved wrong. All this time, the presence of my family had made me oblivious to my previous phobia of the dark. I was surrounded by the love that my parents and younger brother expressed, which helped me overcome my former fear. Now that they were gone, my safety zone vanished. I was once more exposed to my utter fear of being left alone, being abandoned in the silent house, being swallowed up by the infinite darkness.

Chapter 2. Betrayal & Reality

(Continued from Chapter 1.)

ddd

She hated it.

She hated Korea.

She hated her dad.

She hated her parents.

She hated this world.

fffffff

As if the neighborhood was aware of all that had happened, everything remained

in total silence. There were no barks, no sounds of restless children shouting,

and absolutely no one on the streets. Monica’s once quiet sobs now fully echoed

throughout her deserted neighborhood. She felt confused and most of all,

she felt betrayed.

ddd

Betrayed by her parents and the world, just when she thought that she has found

“home,” she was once again forced to move. The tears were like her ice cream,

melting off the face of the cone. Her tears, along with the completely melted ice

cream dripped on the cold cement floor of their quiet neighborhood. But this was

the start of a new beginning, those were the last tears that anyone would see from Monica.

dddd

Without knowing it, Monica grew stronger, stronger than she had ever been.

the twelve people I met in november

Okay, before you all go on and criticize me for not capitalizing some of the letters in this title, let me explain. I’m merely inferring that the majority of people have read, seen, or at least heard of Mitch Albom’s The Five People You Meet In Heaven. Honestly, this post will not have anything to do with that novel, it was just the mere title that inspired me to write about twelve fabulous people I met in November. By the way, if you happen to be one of those people that I know but did not mention below, please don’t be offended. These aren’t the only ones in my life that are special. Everyone, no matter if I met them online, at school, in my neighborhood, or even in the library, are a special person to me, but I really want to point out the following twelve people:

1. Most Valuable Player: Staci S.

She was one of the captains of our basketball team. I seriously don’t know how we would have done anything without her. She always knew what to do: when to call out the exact play during our games, when to text us all at night (reminding us not to forget our uniforms, money, passports, etc…), and lastly, she was aware of our feelings before and after the game. She, along with Alice, relentlessly poured out inspiring quotes just when we needed it as a TEAM. Staci was one of the best point guards on our team, making some of the most phenomenal lay-ups (Remember our last game?). She has probably played basketball the longest on our team and her passion towards it is unbelievable. She knows so much about basketball and is always giving us good critique on how to improve! Without doubt, most valuable player goes to Staci!

2. Best Leadership: Alice A.

She was another one of our captains and she did a wonderful job carrying out her duty as one. As if she was our “Mom,” Alice always looked after each and every one of us. Without fail, she would always be next to us if we got injured during practices or games. Additionally, she always made sure that we would start our practices at exactly 3 P.M., not a minute less or more; making sure that all twelve heads were present and running our usual laps. On the team, she was a strong center who made many attempts with free throws and rebounds. She made sure that no one made it to our beloved key. Also, she is one of the many players who has improved tremendously in running. In Seventeens, she has become much faster compared to the first time that we ran. Good job Alice! That’s the way to improve!

3. Most Free Throws: Yena S.

Now, here is a girl who is just amazing when it comes to basketball. I would have to say that she is one of the many members on our team who has unbelievably improved. Never hesitating to throw her body for the ball, she has bruises and scars that literally cover her knees (She began to wear knees pads during the middle of the season). She has also contributed a lot to our team’s winning streak (well..you know what I mean). Her free throws almost 99.% of the time goes in. Need I mention that she was also the person who decorated our first goal at YISS? As a power forward, her charisma during the game even got the boys scared. You go girl!

4. Most Versatile: Megan (Ghee) S.

She literally played ALL of the positions, beginning from the point guard to shooting guard to small forward and even as a power forward (Okay…maybe she didn’t play the center). She never complained about how long she was in the games, or how many different positions she played. Always trying her best on court, she knew how to successfully carry out each position. Her original position was a shooting guard, but Megan is a multi-player, who the coach always calls out for during the game. It I rare that you will see her on the bench for more than a minute. This cute player is a pretty fast runner to, always being one of the top ones to finish our daily runs of Seventeens. Not only that, she has great form and accuracy when doing lay-ups, even with her left hand! (Now, that is hard to do, since we are all righties!) Way to go Ghee!

5. Best Attitude: Eungi C.

Both a cross-country varsity runner and a basketball player, Eungi is one of those people who seem to be good at everything. She is one of the fastest runners and has very accurate shooting skills, especially with her free throws. Never complaining about our practices, not even about our Seventeens, she always has a shining smile upon her face. This gives the rest of our team members strength and reminds us to have FUN with basketball. Her position as a shooting guard is just the right position for both her running and shooting skills. Eungi, we don’t know what we would do without you! (there would be no one to follow during warm-ups, you are the one who sets the limit! )

6. Best Team Spirit: Ann Y.

Ann is our team’s other power forward, standing out on the court with her bright brownish-orangish hair. She has incredible strength, once you get a pass from her, you will never look at her in the same way. Usually shy, yet aggressive when it comes to basketball; be prepared to be astonished by her power on the court during games. Also, this power can be seen when the basketball swishes through the net, producing a clean shot that some people envy. She does a fantastic job in defense as well, as she holds the other team away from reaching our net.

7. The Best Defense: Lisa K.

One of the small forwards, Lisa is also one team member who has improved immensely throughout the season. Her passes are full of power and most of her shots go in with a “swoosh!” In fact, she was one of the few players who put in a free throw and stopped the endless relay of wall-sits that we did. A valuable team player, especially on defense, she makes sure that the other team doesn’t roam around her territory. She presses them and has one of the most effective defense skills; the other team can barely get passed through her incredible defense without being fouled. Our Lisa, always with her bangs cutely tied up into a ponytail, contributes deeply to our team.

8. Best Improved: Jeemin H.

Another one of our point guards, Jeemin is always running at full speed to across the court, giving instructions on what to do and leading the team. She is always cheerful and smiling, however, when you see her on the court, you can’t find this sweet Jeemin anywhere. She becomes solemn and takes the game seriously. You can always see her trying to beat the other team to the ball and making some of the best passes. Despite her small figure, Jeemin gets a lot of rebounds because she boxes out. If you don’t know what “boxing out” is, it means sticking your gluteus maximus out and pressing it against the opponent’s body to prevent them from getting closer to the net and ultimately, shooting a goal. Jeemin rocks at this!

9. Most Blocked Shots: Jenn N.

Besides Alice, Jenn also is the center. She is the tallest amongst our team and the thinnest as well. However, do not look down on her because of her thin figure, Jenn has this hidden power beneath all that skin. She has greatly improved as well and even made a couple of points at our last game. We were all awestruck by her improvement and can count on Jenn to make a few goals. Jenn uses her super long legs to jump and that hidden strength to swish the ball into the net. Jenn is also the photographer of our team. In fact, all of these photos on this post were taken by her. She has her camera with her 24/7 and has now provided us with memories that we will treasure throughout our highschool year. Thanks Jenn!

10. Jane Y.

As it happens to be my position also, Jane is a small forward. She carries out the duty of this position very well, trapping the other team and making sure that they cannot get passed her awesome defense. Jane’s passes are the most strongest passes that you wil ever receive. It is just enough for you to break your finger if you fail to catch it properly. The basketball goes past you in a flash with speed and power. Sometimes, I am afraid to recieve this girl’s pass, afraid that the ball might break my finger. This is not the only good point of Jane. She also has incredibly accurate shooting skills. She has earned us many points in our games with her long shots and precise free throws. No one can shoot like Jane can.

11. Suzie K.

She is always running with all her might up and down the court following the ball, before anyone else. The fastest runner on our team, we are proud of Suzie. She even beat all of the varsity girls’ basketball players with Seventeens, therefore, she is the fastest. Another member who is aggressive during games, we can always count on her to steal the ball from the other team. In fact, she always made us laugh with her love for the basketball. It is just impossible to steal the ball from Suzie, once she has a hold of it, she will never let go until the referee or coach says so. Our speedy shooting guard, we will definitely never forget your passion for the ball.

12. The Best Manager Ever: Last but not least, The person who helped all of these people out, even me. The person who managed to tame (?) the team, a person none other than Jenny P. She would always have our water bottles ready to go, despite the fact that she was busy with scoring and recording. She never missed any of our games or practices and always rooted us on. Being a loyal manager, she never abandoned our team and although she didn’t get to play this year, next year, she will most definitely become one of us. However, even as a manager, Jenny is an significant member of our team.

And this concludes the members of KIS Girls’ Junior Varsity Team of 2008-09. I miss all of you guys. And remember that we’ll always meet in the month of November, on top of a glossy basketball court. Until then, hope that you all are happy and are thinking about us as….the team of 2008. ♥

The Monster Within

I’ve noticed this monster living inside of me. One that is lazy, procrastinates, has a bad temper, and is constantly persuading me to do absolutely nothing. This monster relentlessly appears and tries to take over my body. Each time, a battle arises, yet it seems that there are more times when I give in to my hidden desires.

ddddddddddddd
I mean just yesterday, I was trying to finish my math homework, but….you guessed it, this monster appeared and dragged me to the living room, right in front of the TV. I could feel my body being sucked into the couch like water being absorbed by a great sponge. The familiar scent of leather and the cool texture of the couch pressing against my entire body. I was instantly warped into the magical world of television; my eyes being glued onto the colorful moving screen. I struggled to return to my room, to grab the remote and turn this evil tool off. The monster appeared once again and this time we decided to compromise. We would just watch television for a mere hour. Nothing more, nothing less, just ONE hour.
.
.
.
I looked at the clock, there was one minute left until the hour that we promised would be reached. As I watched the clock’s seconds hand approaching the twelve, a countdown began inside my head.

5…4…3…2…1!!

“Okay, that’s it! I’m getting back to my homework!”

The moment I tried standing up, like a reflex, the monster appeared and with its sweet, coaxing tone, said “Come on, just ten more minutes~ Didn’t you want to watch this show? Wasn’t this the show that you were dying to watch last week?” This was true. I had missed this show last weekend and it was rare that there were reruns for it. Once again, I lost to the monster.

.

.

.

As you can see, this monster always gets it her way.

Despite all this, this monster isn’t a complete stranger to me. This monster is part of who I am, although there are times when I wish it would just disappear. At times, it distracts me, but I accept that as a hidden part of my true self. Not all people love both their good and bad sides, however, I think I can learn to cope with both sides after many more battles between the two.

Now, as for the monster within me, who knows when it will appear?

What will it have in store for me next?

Chapter 1. Dumbstruck, Frustrated, and Tears…

Recently, I was inspired by my friend, Yena, to write about my life experience. She is a great friend of mine, whose posts truly moved me to write more about MY unforgettable past. Now, Yena chose to write about her flight to a new, unfamiliar land: Switzerland. I have chose to write about my long flight back to Korea, the land where I had been born; however, had not set foot on for nine years. So here I go…

The News

dddddddddddd

With a big smile on her face, little twelve-year-old Monica was yet again satisfied

with her dance practice at Dublin’s Dance Academy. She was in high spirits and

babbled on to her father about what song they had danced to and how fun it was,

neglecting to notice that her father had come to pick her up when it was usually

her mother who came. Monica was absolutely thrilled when her father took her

to get some ice cream at Baskin-Robbins 31, which was a rare occasion.

She should have sensed that something was out of place, that something was

wrong…

dddddddddddddddddddddd

Then, it came.

dddddddddddddddddddddd

Just when she started on her chocolate-mint ice cream, her father told her that

they had arrived. Monica looked around her, the surroundings looked familiar,

but it wasn’t their house nor their garage. Her father had parked close to the lake

that was in her neighborhood; from there she was able to see her backyard and

hear her dog barking. Looking for an explanation, Monica looked up at her father…

dddddddddddddddddddddd

She finally saw that something was wrong.

dddddddddddddddddddddd

Her father let out a deep sigh and told her:

.

.

.

We’re moving.”

.

.

.

She dreaded hearing these very words, afraid of losing her friends and ultimately, her hardly earned happiness. It was her fourth time hearing these words from her father, no…this made it her fifth. Monica’s family had moved so many times in the past that she was beginning to lose count. Moments later, she finally managed to stammer,

.

.

.

“T…to…where?”

.

.

.

“To Korea.”

It was at this very moment that Monica could no longer suppress the tears that

she struggled to hold back in front of her father. And finally, she broke down.

The world was instantly blurred and she had trouble making out what kind of

expression her father had. As the steaming hot tears ran down her already wet

face, she let out just one earsplitting scream.

Blogging…The New Facebook?

Let me begin be saying that I’m ADDICTED to blogging. I spend an average of three hours blogging every night! (This might sound like crazy to some of my friends and classmates, but if your an intense blogger, you’ll understand.) I no longer go on Facebook, blogging is the new thing. While Facebook strengthens existing relationships between friends and people that you know, blogs construct special bonds with people from all over the world. People don’t read your blog just for your appearance or to gain popularity, they read it for empathy as they can relate to people who have similar tastes. Each blog represents an individual’s talents, skills, personality, and preferences. It is an exceptionally notable device where personal voice is highly regarded and people who have blogged are aware of this feeling. Despite all this, like most of the students at my school, I had a time when I absolutely dreaded blogging. Here’s my story:

I’ve actually started blogging last year and it wasn’t because I wanted to; it was a requirement for our English class. As a freshmen in high school, I felt that blogging was more of a task that I had to do in order to maintain my grades. I didn’t consider it as a tool that was capable of not only connecting me to rest of the world, but also to the innermost recesses of my heart. Of course, the results were negative — by the end of freshmen year, I never returned to my blog. My blog was stashed somewhere on the Web amongst millions of other sites with NO visitors, subscribers, or updates.

So I neglected blogging until….this year.

Once again, second semester approached and the season of blogging came about at our school. Just like last year, I took no interest, but started my blog. This time it was different; as I started to “experiment” with it, my interest grew. Choosing a theme, picking widgets, writing posts dealing with topics that I ENJOY writing about, and getting comments from other people, I began to interact with my blog at the speed of light! Day by day, I wrote more posts, polished my blog’s appearance, and subscribed to other people’s blogs who shared similar interests. By doing so, I had more visitors and even subscribers! The thrill of having people from all over the world communicate with you and building relationships with them, the increasing number of subscriptions on my Google Reader, and the rising number of e-mails indicating new comments on my blog, only people who have blogs and are dedicated to them can relate to this. Blogging is like a key to unlocking the door to the world and more people are realizing this. To a greater extent, more people are turning to blogs in order to express their inner thoughts and providing an environment ready for deep discussions. Thus, the popularity of blogs are rising and it is becoming the new Facebook.

So for all of you who haven’t touched your blog since….

What? You don’t even remember the last time you’ve visited it?”

Then why not update your blog? It’s the NEW trend.

My Room, The Jungle.

After experiencing an agonizing week of pain and lack of sleep, I have come to my senses that I should change my study habits. However, even before that, I think that I need to clean my room. First of all, let me begin by explaining you about my room. Now, I want to have to inform you that I rarely study in my room. I usually go into my father’s den and study there, where I am free from distraction. My room’s only purpose is for me to get a good night’s sleep. And considering the fact that I get approximately 4~5 hours of sleep each school day, I don’t spend much time in my room.

Now, I know that this isn’t necessarily anything to be proud of but, my room is a complete mess. I don’t remember the last time I actually saw the rug that used to be in my room, if it is still there. It’s truly difficult to see what pattern my floor originally was with the endless piles of clothes, rolled-up socks, past homework papers and grading sheets here and there, numerous backpacks, purses, school bags, and money lying around. Now, I think my floor is white….or is it beige? Oh well, anyways you get the idea. The moment you step into my room, you are in a jungle. I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw a snake jump out. Some describe my room as if it has been hit by an immense tornado (my family members), while some don’t know how to describe it and remain speechless, or even traumatized. I describe it with just one word: comfortable. Although it may be hard to believe, it is actually easier for me to find things in my room when it is messy. I recognize where I placed all of my things and can find it almost instantly. When my room is clean, I have a harder time looking for objects. I don’t remember where I put them in my room. This causes me to open every drawer that I own just to find my mp3 player or Macbook charger. I like my room unkempt, for it sends out this disorganized yet cozy vibe.

From time to time, I do clean my room. However, it isn’t long before another tornado passes by and transforms it into another jungle. I realized that this cycle has to be broken some time before I go to college; my roommate might either just try to kill me or move out. So, I better go. My jungle is calling for me.
